Live artifacts & reporting

A live artifact is a dashboard Claude builds once and then keeps current — it re-asks your connectors for fresh numbers every time you open it. Ask for one instead of a report, and you stop re-running the report.

Who it's for: everyone Needs: the Claude desktop app Sharing: anyone at Melinda Maria Questions: David
What “live” means Where they live How to ask for one Sharing with the team What they can & can't do Advanced — real apps
Good news on the plan: sharing a live artifact with a colleague is a Team/Enterprise feature, and Melinda Maria is on a Claude Team plan. On a personal Pro or Max account, live artifacts can't be shared at all. Ours can.

What “live” actually means

Four things happen between you opening an artifact and seeing a current number.

Step 1

You open it

Opening it is the trigger. There's no schedule to set and nothing to configure — looking at it is what starts the refresh.

Step 2

Cache paints it instantly

A short cache of recent data draws the dashboard right away, so you're never watching a spinner.

Step 3

It re-queries on its own

Behind that, it goes back to the connectors you named, pulls current numbers, and updates the screen.

Step 4

You can force it

A refresh button in the artifact's header re-pulls immediately, skipping the cache — for when something just changed.

🔄 Always build in a Refresh button — make this a habit. Claude puts a refresh control in the artifact's header, but people genuinely don't find it, and then they assume the numbers are stale and stop trusting the dashboard. Ask for one inside the page, and say where you want it: “add a Refresh data button at the top of each section, and show the time it last pulled next to it.” It costs you eight words and it's the difference between a dashboard people rely on and one they open once. Our Connector Issue Tracker does exactly this with its “Check status” button.

Making one that people actually open twice

Live data is only half of it. The dashboards that get used follow the same few rules, and Claude will apply all of them if you ask:

1
One headline number

Lead with the single figure the dashboard exists to answer. Everything else is supporting detail.

2
Five or six things, no more

A wall of tiles reads as noise. If it needs more, it's two dashboards.

3
Colour only the exceptions

Red should mean “act on this.” If everything is coloured, nothing is.

4
Stamp the time

Show when the data was last pulled. It's what turns a number into a number people trust.

5
On brand, on a phone

Say “Melinda Maria brand colours” and “readable on a phone” — both are one-word wins.

Create a live artifact: a wholesale money dashboard using ApparelMagic. Headline number at the top, five tiles max, Melinda Maria brand colours, red only for things that need action, a Refresh data button on each section with a last-pulled stamp, readable on a phone.
⚠️ The thing to be careful about: a live artifact uses your connectors without asking permission each time — that's what makes it feel instant. Every connector an artifact reads from is read-only — the the two deliberate exceptions, Loop Returns (CX write tools) and Canto (DAM organization tools), are never used by an artifact — so the worst case is an empty panel. It's still the reason you'd never point an artifact at a tool that can send, change, or delete things.

Where they live

Live artifacts save themselves. You'll find them under Artifacts in the Claude desktop app — set Filter by Cowork to see just the live ones and hide the one-off artifacts that come out of ordinary chats. They keep a version history, so a bad change can be rolled back.

The Artifacts view in the Claude desktop app filtered by Cowork, showing live artifact cards including Claude Adoption Tracker, Hub Login Tracker and MM Intelligence Build Tracker
The Artifacts view, filtered to Cowork. These are real Melinda Maria live artifacts. Each card shows when it was last edited; the data inside refreshes when you open it.
💻 Desktop app only. This is the part people trip on: live artifacts do not appear in the Artifacts view on claude.ai or on your phone. If a teammate says “I don't see it,” this is almost always why — send them to the desktop app.

How to ask for one

In a Cowork task, describe what you want and name the connectors it should use — Claude builds it and saves it automatically. Or from the Artifacts view, click New artifact and choose the Cowork option, then answer the setup questions.

A good ask names the source, the slice, and the refresh

Create a live artifact: a wholesale money dashboard using ApparelMagic — open invoices, payments received and credit memos, this month vs last, refreshed every time I open it. Headline number at the top, Melinda Maria brand colors.
Create a live artifact: an open-orders tracker using ShipHero — what's picked, packed, shipped and stuck, with anything older than three days flagged red. Add a Refresh data button and show the last-pulled time.
💡 The words that matter are “create a live artifact” plus the name of the connector. Leave the connector out and you'll get a one-time answer in the chat instead of something that keeps itself current.

Sharing it with the team

Artifacts are saved to your account, so nobody else can see one until you share it. On our Team plan that's three clicks.

1

Open the ⋮ menu on the artifact card

Hover the card in your Artifacts view and click the three dots in its corner. You'll get Unpin, Share, and Delete. Choose Share.

The three-dot menu open on a live artifact card showing Unpin, Share and Delete
Step 1 — the ⋮ menu. Note that Delete sits right below Share in the same menu, and it isn't reversible. Click carefully.
2

Click “Share & copy link”

Claude confirms who will be able to see it — only people in the Melinda Maria organization. Until you click, it says “Unshared · Only you have access.”

The Share artifact dialog explaining only users in the Melinda Maria organization can access shared artifacts
Step 2 — the Share dialog. “Only users in Melinda Maria organization can access artifacts you share.” There is no public option, by design.
3

Send the link — and leave auto-updates on

You get a claude:// link that opens straight into the desktop app. Paste it into Slack or email. Automatically share updates is on by default, which means every future version reaches them without you re-sending anything.

The Artifact shared dialog showing the claude:// link, Copy link, the Automatically share updates toggle switched on, and Unshare and Share latest buttons
Step 3 — shared. The Automatically share updates toggle is the one that matters: leave it on and your colleagues always see the current version. Share latest pushes the newest version manually if you ever switch it off.
The non-obvious part — it fills with THEIR data, not yours. When a teammate opens your shared artifact, it connects to their connectors and their sign-ins. That's deliberate: nobody sees data they wouldn't normally be allowed to see. It also means that if they haven't connected ApparelMagic, the ApparelMagic panel shows an error where your numbers would be. When someone reports “half of it is broken,” the fix is almost always that they need to connect that tool — send them to Get connected.
🔒 Two things worth knowing before you share. A shared artifact also exposes the attachments and files from the conversation that created it — so if you built it from a sensitive spreadsheet, that comes along. And unsharing kills the link permanently: sharing the same artifact again generates a brand-new link, and anyone holding the old one is out. Don't unshare casually if the link is sitting in a Slack channel people rely on.

When a link isn't the right answer

Share the live link

Best when they need the current number, not a picture of it. They get a self-updating copy that respects their own access, and future versions arrive automatically.

Export a snapshot

Ask Claude to export it as a PDF, image, or spreadsheet and post that instead. Frozen in time, but it opens anywhere and needs no Claude account.

Put it on the dashboard

If the whole company needs one always-on number, it shouldn't depend on one person's account staying shared. That's a build request for the shared reporting dashboard.

Advanced — when a dashboard isn't enough

A live artifact lives inside Claude. Sometimes you need something that lives on the open web, remembers things for everyone, or teaches Claude to read a system it has never seen. Same conversation, bigger output — you describe what you want and Claude writes and deploys the software. Here is the ladder, and every rung below has already been climbed at Melinda Maria.

1

A live artifact

Where everyone starts. Lives in Claude, refreshes on open, shared inside the company with a link. No hosting, no address, nothing to maintain.

Ours: the Connector Issue Tracker and the Claude Adoption Tracker — both pictured earlier on this page.

“Create a live artifact: …”

2

A standalone app with its own web address

Claude writes a real website or tool and deploys it to Cloudflare Pages. It gets a melindamaria.ai address and sits behind Cloudflare Access, so only Melinda Maria staff can open it — and they don't need a Claude account to do it. This is how you reach people who will never open Claude.

Ours: onboarding.melindamaria.ai — the site you're reading right now — and todo.melindamaria.ai, the AI roadmap board.

Cloudflare PagesCloudflare Access

“Build this as a standalone site and deploy it to Cloudflare Pages, behind Access so only our team can see it.”

3

Give it a database so it remembers

Add a database — Cloudflare D1 or Supabase — and the app stops being a snapshot. It stores records, keeps history, and several people can write to the same data and all see the same thing. This is also how we keep data that would otherwise disappear.

Ours: when we left ShipBob, the 225,385 historical orders were copied into a D1 archive — still searchable today, long after we stopped paying for the platform. The ApparelMagic connector keeps a similar history copy so trend questions come back in seconds instead of hammering the ERP.

Cloudflare D1SupabaseWorkers KV

“Give it a database so entries are saved permanently and everyone sees the same list.”

4

Build a connector, so Claude can read a whole new system

The biggest one. A connector is a small program — a Cloudflare Worker — that exposes another system's data to Claude as named, read-only tools. It is the thing that turns “Claude can't see our ERP” into “ask ApparelMagic anything.” Every custom connector documented on this site was built this way, in conversation.

Ours: a dozen of them running at addresses like apparelmagic-mcp.melindamaria.ai and canto-mcp.melindamaria.ai — each one Google-sign-in gated, read-only, and hosted on our own Cloudflare account.

Cloudflare WorkersOAuth 2.1GitHub

“Build a read-only connector for [system], hosted on our Cloudflare account, gated to our Google work accounts.”

🧰 The back-end tools Claude can already reach. Claude is connected to Cloudflare (hosting, databases, domains, access control), Supabase (databases and logins), GitHub (code storage and history), Netlify (alternative hosting), and Figma (designs in and out). That means it can not only write the software but put it somewhere real, wire up its database, and keep the code saved — without you touching a terminal.
Before you ask for a rung 2, 3 or 4 build, talk to David. Not to slow you down — because anything with a web address, a database, or a login costs money, needs a domain, and has to be maintained by somebody after you've moved on. A five-minute conversation up front decides whether the thing you want is a live artifact (free, instant, yours) or a piece of company infrastructure (worth doing properly). Both are good answers.
🧠 An honest word on “Claude built it.” Software that runs on the open web can break, cost money, or leak if it's built carelessly. Everything above was built with review, read-only defaults, and a login in front of it. Ask for the same: “make it read-only, put it behind our team login, and explain what could go wrong.”
